How to know when your website is working for you?

Your website should be bringing in enquiries and building trust while you get on with running your business. Here's how to tell whether it's actually doing that.

You’ve got a website, it’s live, it’s doing its thing out there in the world, and then you think… is it actually working for me? It’s a question we hear quite often, and it’s a really good one to ask. Because the truth is, a website can look absolutely lovely, tick all the aesthetic boxes, and still not be pulling its weight for your business. So how do you know if yours is genuinely working, or if it’s just sat there looking pretty while your potential clients scroll past something else?

Beyond just being online

First things first, there’s a difference between your website being live and your website working for you. Your site could be up and running, technically available and accessible, but that doesn’t automatically mean it’s doing what you actually need it to do. You might check website status regularly and see everything is green, but that only tells you half the story. It tells you that your site is online, that it’s there, that people can reach it, but it doesn’t tell you whether people are actually finding it, engaging with it or, most importantly, taking action because of it.

A website that works is one that brings you the right clients, answers their questions before they even have to ask them, and makes them feel confident enough to get in touch. It might be worth thinking about what success actually looks like for your specific business, because that’s going to be different for everyone. For some it’s enquiries, for others it’s building authority in your field or establishing yourself as someone worth paying attention to.

The metrics that actually matter

Analytics are brilliant, but they can also be overwhelming and sometimes misleading if you’re not sure what you’re looking at. Rather than drowning in data, I think it works much better to focus on a few key things that tell you whether your website is earning its place in your business. How many people are actually finding you through search? Are they spending more than a few seconds on your site, or are they bouncing straight off? Are they getting in touch, downloading something, or taking the action you want them to take?

Beyond the numbers, there’s the qualitative stuff too, the conversations you have. When someone does contact you from your website, do they feel like they already know you, or does it feel like they’ve had to do detective work to understand what you actually do? The best websites create a sense of familiarity and understanding before anyone picks up the phone. They position you in a way that naturally attracts the right people and gives the wrong-fit clients a polite way to look elsewhere, which honestly is perfect because you want to work with people who get you.

The health check your website needs

If you’re feeling uncertain about whether your website is pulling its weight, it might be time for an honest review. This doesn’t have to be complicated, it’s really just about stepping back and asking some straightforward questions. Is it representing you and your business in a way that makes you proud? When you imagine your ideal client landing on your homepage, would they feel like they’ve found the right person? Does it feel like you, or does it feel like a generic template that could belong to anyone?

Beyond the look and feel, there’s the practical stuff too. Is your hosting reliable and fast? There’s nothing worse than losing potential clients because your site is slow or keeps going down. We look after the hosting side of things for all the websites we build, and we make sure they’re not just fast but secure and eco-friendly too, because all of that matters. You want to know that when someone tries to reach you, they can actually get to you without faff.

What happens next

If your website review reveals that things aren’t quite working the way you’d hoped, the good news is that’s fixable. Sometimes it’s small tweaks, sometimes it’s a more fundamental rethink. Either way, the important thing is to understand what’s not serving you so you can do something about it. Whether that’s refining your messaging, improving your site’s performance, or completely rebuilding from scratch with intention and clarity.

If you’d like to chat about how your website is performing and whether it’s really doing what you need it to do, I would love to hear from you. Get in touch and let’s have a conversation about where you are now and what success could look like for your business.
