Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with more than 200 small business owners, each with their own vision, worries and dreams for their business. Building websites for this many different people, across different industries and at different stages of growth, teaches you something pretty valuable: there are some patterns that emerge, some truths that hold firm regardless of whether you’re selling services, products or expertise. I wanted to share what I’ve learned, because I think it might genuinely help you as you think about your own business website.
Your website needs to feel like you
This is the one that surprises people the most, and it’s also the thing I see go wrong most often. Business owners will come to me with websites that look polished and professional, but they don’t sound like them, they don’t look like them, and honestly, they don’t feel like them. A website built from a template, or one that tries to be everything to everyone, never converts as well as a website that is unapologetically yours. When I work on custom website design, we start with a proper conversation about who you are, what makes you different and what your ideal clients actually need to hear. Your personality is not a barrier to good design, it is the foundation of it. The businesses I work with who have the most success are the ones who let their real selves show up on their website, quirks and all.
Clarity beats cleverness every single time
I have watched beautiful websites with confusing navigation struggle, and I have seen straightforward, clear websites absolutely shine. When someone lands on your website, they need to understand what you do within seconds, who it is for, and what the next step is. Not because they are lazy, but because they are busy, and they are making a decision fast. Strip it back. Keep it simple. Tell them what you do, show them you are good at it, and give them a clear way to get in touch. The websites that convert best are the ones where every single page has a purpose, the navigation makes sense and there is no mystery about what happens next.
Trust is built through consistency and follow-through
I have noticed that businesses with the most loyal customers are not the ones with the flashiest websites, they are the ones where the website matches the service, where the promises made are the promises kept, and where you feel like a real person is behind it. Your website is often the first impression a potential client has of you, so it matters that it feels reliable, professional and genuinely interested in helping them rather than just making a sale. When you invest in proper branding, including a considered logo design and consistent messaging, people notice. They remember you. They trust you more easily. And they are more likely to recommend you to others, which is honestly the best kind of marketing any small business can get.
You need to show up consistently to make it work
The businesses I have worked with who have seen real growth are not the ones who built a website and then forgot about it. They are the ones who understand that a website is the beginning of a conversation, not the end of one. This might mean regular blog posts, regular updates to your social feeds, regular emails to your community, or all three, depending on where your clients actually spend their time. A website is brilliant, and it is often the foundation that everything else builds from, but it is not a set-it-and-forget-it tool. The ones who thrive are the ones who keep showing up, keep being helpful, keep building relationships. If you would like support with this part, whether it is regular blog content or social media support, that is something we can absolutely help with, but either way, consistency is what moves the needle.
Working with more than 200 small businesses has taught me that there is no magic formula, but there are principles that work. Your website should be honest, clear and genuinely interested in serving your ideal clients, and you should show up regularly to build on the foundation it creates. If you would like to chat about what a proper custom website design could do for your business, or if you would like to explore a full brand refresh, I would love to hear from you.
