What Is Digital Marketing?

Learn what digital marketing is, and how to synergise your online marketing strategy.

Digital marketing is one of those phrases that you hear and then have to pretend like you understand what it means… so let me enlighten you and tell you what it actually means. At its simplest, it’s just how you connect with people online. Everything from the advert you (doom) scroll past on Instagram to the email that lands in your inbox about a weekend sale.

It’s really about people, not tactics

The bit the term tends to bury is that digital marketing isn’t about clever tools as such. It’s about people. Understanding where your customers actually spend their time, what keeps them up at night, what they care about and then showing up in a way that feels like you rather than a billboard.

Get that part right and everything else gets so much easier. Get it wrong and you can have the slickest ads in the world landing in front of completely the wrong people. So before any of the techy stuff comes into it, it starts with really understanding who you’re actually talking to (your ideal client).

It’s a handful of channels working as a team

There are loads of different ways to do it, and you’ll have heard most of the names already….but not necessarily understand them. SEO is about helping the right people find you on Google. Paid ads (the PPC ones) buy you a spot at the top while you wait for that to build. Social media is where you show a bit of personality and start actual conversations and be social ideally. Email keeps you in touch with the people who already like you, and content, like the very blog you’re reading right now, quietly builds trust over time….and allows for more depth and personality to shine through.

You don’t need all of them, mind. The trick is picking the two or three that suit your business and your energy, then letting them support each other rather than spending an hour writing your blog, 2 hours on social media and burning out by Wednesday.

Your website is the heart of all of it

Now, I’ll happily show my bias as a web designer for a moment. Every single one of those channels, the ads, the posts, the emails, is really just a way of pointing someone back to your website. It’s the one place online that’s properly yours, open day and night, doing the quiet work of turning a curious visitor into an actual enquiry.

Which is exactly why a slow, confusing or out-of-date site quietly undoes all that effort. You can do everything else beautifully, but if people land somewhere that doesn’t feel like you or doesn’t make it obvious what to do next, they’ll drift off and you’ll never even know they were there floating about. The marketing brings them to the door… your website decides whether they come in.

Behind every click is a person

It’s so easy to get buried in the numbers, the clicks, the conversion rates and the cost-per-this-and-that, and forget that every one of those little data points is a real person having a real day. The marketing that actually works is the marketing that respects that.

It speaks plainly, it’s consistent and it sounds like a person you’d happily have a coffee with, rather than an obnoxious brand shouting over everyone else. Maybe that’s just me?? That’s the whole secret… be useful, be human and be unmistakably you.

Where to start

If all of this feels like a bit much, please don’t panic… nobody does it all at once, and you honestly don’t need to. Start with a website that actually sounds like you and does its job properly, then add a channel or two on top once you’ve found your feet.

That’s exactly the sort of thing Ted and I help small businesses around Worcester with every week, building the website that sits at the heart of it and pointing everything else towards it. Drop us a message and we’ll talk through where to begin, with no pressure and no tech speak. I’d love to hear from you.
